What are some good sweet Port wines that are inexpensive?
Im looking for a wine that is fruity and sweet, not dry, that i can enjoy 2-3 glasses and still have a nice taste in my mouth but also have a nice feeling from them. I am just recently turned from drinking for pure effect to drinking for taste and pleasure as well

- Glad to hear it! My glory days are long behind me as well, and I've found I enjoy a much broader range of drinks now that I'm not drinking just to get hammered. If you're looking for a really good Port, I might recommend Mayo's 2005 Russian River Valley (Ricci Vineyard) Zinfandel Port. I particularly love it because it's made the same way an Old Vine Zinfandel is, which are one of my favorites. It had a very smooth and fruity finish, and had hints of vanilla and strawberry jam. I actually visited Mayo last month, and discovered they had quite a few delicious wines. Their vineyard is in the Napa/Sonoma, CA area, so hopefully you are close, or are able to purchase it in your area. *Also, I should point out that cheap ports don't taste all that good. Since they are a bit more rare than other wines, expect the prices to be higher than, say, a Cabernet or Merlot. The wine I mentioned will run you about $40 for a 375ml bottle.
- Ports are incredible. Start with a 10 year old Tawny or a Late Bottle Vintage (LBV). Late Bottle Vintage Ports "resemble" true vintage Ports and are slightly more full bodied than Tawny Ports, both are very tasty. In Canada prices average $20 to $30 for LBV Ports and should be less in the US. Try Graham's or Taylor's LBV (about 20.00) Bear in mind that Ports are fortified and usually have alcohol content in the 20% range. Three glasses of 5 oz can be much (not for me!) as Port is usually an after dinner drink (2 - 3 oz). Because the wines are fortified even dry Ports won't taste all that "dry". Don't forget Sherries, med dry Kosher, sweet Vermouth, Late Harvest, Ice Wines and on and on....... cheers!
